Internet technology is wildly successful in part because of its elegant design and adherence to principles that result in, and are based in, simplicity, scalability, and universality. We can apply this to energy systems to use a simple mechanism (one-way pricing), use it in all contexts (countries, building types, wholesale markets, retail sales, and internally within buildings), and at any power level. This is the essence of Price-Based Grid Coordination (PBGC). This talk focuses on PBGC for retail electricity customers. The core is a system architecture for how prices and control signals move from the utility grid to individual DER in buildings, including the specific communication protocols involve. It will also cover underlying principles that led to its design, and needs going forward in general, and for LFE specifically.
