In 2018, RTE (the power transmission system operator in France) decided to embrace open source and to place it at the heart of its digitalization strategy. This shift was motivated by the necessity to increase tenfold the speed, cost-efficiency and innovation of core-business software development projects. Indeed, a disruptive approach was needed to support the energy transition while preserving operational performance. The session will present the "think big - start small - fail fast" approach adopted by RTE to build its open source strategy, addressing key topics such as executive support, internal transformation and community building. During this journey, RTE had to tackle various issues both at the enterprise level (legal, business case, procurement) and at the project level (onboarding, cultural change, best practices).
