RTE designed and ran a series of challenges to investigate the potential of Artificial Intelligence methods in power network operation and to highlight their use to solve key challenges of the next-generation power networks. The last edition took place during the NeurIPS 2020 conference. It was well received by the international community attracting over 300 participants worldwide, with either AI or power system background, bridging those 2 communities together. Participants had to operate simulated powergrid for a full week at 5 minutes resolution and propose the best actions to ensure its security and robustness, facing unplanned contingencies and unknown level of renewable energy sources. Winning teams from cutting-edge AI companies even demonstrate remarkable performances to handle complex situations. L2RPN has been a successful worldwide open-science initiative starting with diverse and fruitful collaborations to set up and organize the competitions, and eventually releasing all the benchmark and open-solutions open-source to enable future progress in science. Another contribution of this challenge is our proposed comprehensive ’Grid2Op’ framework. This framework is open-sourced and easily re-usable to define new environments with its companion GridAlive ecosystem and is compatible with a wide variety of powergrid simulators.
